It was billed as Bleeding Hearts gig of the year
at Ronnie Scott’s Club in Birmingham. A special one off never to be
repeated live acoustic album recording called “Anarcoustica”.
The posters were up, the recording gear was
hired and paid for, engineers contracted, video crew and cameras at
the ready, tickets issued, people coming from all over including
Europe for this one. Everything was in place and it was all going
just too smoothly. Something can’t be right here, this is Bleeding Hearts,
something always happens!? Mmmmmmmmmmm.....
One week to go before the big day
and despite repeated assurances from Ronnie Scott’s that everything
was all “A-OK” they suddenly announced at the eleventh hour that
they had closed their doors as a music venue. After 12 years as a venue
they stated publicly that they no longer wanted music or musicians
‘cus they were too much trouble! Instead they wanted girls girls girls,
dancing naked around Poles.
Lucky Poles some may think ‘cus as a nation
they’ve had it pretty “tuff” for he last 50 years — but no we are
talking steel poles (alright tubes) at tables here; where sad sexually
frustrated businessmen, politicians and maybe even A&R men?
(in Birmingham? Now you’re being silly—Ed) get their rocks
off and feel they need something else to think about when
with their wives or girlfriends.

Gel did offer to strip and dance so the gig
could still go ahead but the management declined Gel’s rather generous
offer stating he hadn’t got the legs for it; so we were told to go
away and record it somewhere else.
After all the hard work organising this special
gig the band were now in panic mode but determined to press ahead with it.
An emergency council was called, phones calls were made, sweat was
sweated and streets trodden in search of another venue.
With hours to go the “Flapper & Firkin” in
Birmingham, (big thanks to them) a mere stones throw away from Ronnie’s
came to the rescue; press releases and more phone calls and a few
hundred letters later and the gig was on.

Mind you the band are beginning to think
this “Anarcoustica” thing does have a curse....... when the band
and crew were setting up the gear before the show, the recording
equipment stopped working only to commence functioning 2 minutes
before Bleeding Hearts came on stage and Steve’s guitar electrics
broke and only started worked very quietly during the show.
Despite all of this the album was mixed, artwork done, pressed and is now available, so buy it (please)!
